BREAKING THE RULES is built around in-depth interviews and shooting on location across South Africa with the four principal characters (see THE STORY).  Full of history and personal insight, these interviews bring to light many issues – oppression and reconciliation, racial justice, the role of violence and non-violence in resistance movements…and above all else, the power of individuals to make a difference.  

Completing the interwoven narrative is commentary by many other individuals who recall apartheid’s brutality and shed light on the influences of the struggle in today’s South Africa.  Rare archival materials – photographs, film footage and documents – enrich the film.  BREAKING THE RULES also features an original musical score written and performed by South African musicians.
